"Independent Cogitate" Chinese and Western Contemporary Art Exchange Exhibition Grandly Opens at the New York State Capitol

June 11, 2019, was a momentous day for the Chinese art community in New York. The bright summer sun shone magnificently through the high stained-glass windows of the New York State Capitol. Amid a meeting of 207 state legislators, Deputy Speaker Felix W. Ortiz solemnly introduced a special group of guests—ten artists primarily from mainland China. He announced that the "Independent Cogitate" Chinese and Western Contemporary Art Exchange Exhibition had officially opened in this renowned Capitol building. The Speaker also formally introduced each artist to the members of parliament, who responded with warm applause, to which the artists graciously waved back.

Felix W. Ortiz emphasized that this exhibition was the first ever held in the history of the Capitol building, creating a brand new chapter in its history. As witnesses to this exciting moment, we are all very happy and proud. Thank you for your great contribution to the exhibition and for your selfless dedication! Culture and art are bonds and messengers of peace; they enhance understanding among people and nations and break down barriers. In today's sensitive Sino-US relations, the success of this exhibition undoubtedly plays a positive role in easing tensions.

This joint exhibition of Chinese and Western contemporary art was sponsored by the New York Contemporary Art Center, co-sponsored by the Office of the Deputy Speaker of the New York State Assembly and the Enlai Museum of Art, and curated by artist David Chen. At the opening ceremony, the ten participating artists—David Chen, Tiffany AJ Zhu, Pei Zhuangxin, Yang Yi, Yulin Huang, Elegant Gao, Rong Guangsen, Sun Mou, He Binghua, and Zhang Baimu—received certificates of Excellent Works awarded by the New York State Assembly.

The list of participating artists includes: Jose Alfonso Cuni, Paul Campbell, David Chen, Pedro Cuni, Steven Balogh, Michel Alexis, Pei Zhuangxin, Tiffany AJ Zhu, Rong Guangsen, Lin Sha, Hai Wei, Yulin Huang, Xu Bo, He Binghua, Zhang Baimu, Sun Mou, Yang Yi, Yao Lishuang, Ouyang Lisa, Lin Xizi, An Qibang, Fan Xiaoli, Xiaoling Luo, Ye Tian, Wang Kai, Su Dong, Liu Shulong, Elegant Gao, and Feng Jianha.

The successful staging of this exhibition not only showcased the charm of Chinese and Western contemporary art but also built a bridge for cultural exchange between China and the United States, enhancing the friendship between the people of both nations.
