DAVID CHEN
David Chen an artist & curator residing in the United States, He moved to New York City in 1992 to study at the New York Art Students League. He has previously served as the director of the Qiantang Bay Art Museum in Hangzhou and as a visiting lecturer at the Shanghai Theatre Academy. Currently, he holds the position of Art Director for the Asia-Pacific region at the New York Contemporary Art Center and serves as the Secretary-General of the American Asian Artists Association. David’s work delves deep into the exploration of human nature through the study of impressions and concepts. His artistic philosophy distinguishes between sensory impressions, which arise in our minds for unknown reasons, and reflective impressions, which stem from our concepts. Sensory impressions produce various sensations—such as coldness, heat, hunger, thirst, bitterness, and happiness—that leave lasting imprints, or concepts, in our minds. These concepts, even after the original impression fades, continue to exist and can evoke new impressions of desire, aversion, hope, or fear upon reflection. Reflective impressions are particularly significant in David’s work, as they are stored in memory and imagination, forming concepts that can produce other impressions and concepts. The reflective impressions that hold the most importance are those related to desires, emotions, and sentiments. By using brushes and colors on canvas, David meticulously creates a series of reflective impression works that illustrate these concepts in detail, allowing viewers to explore the intricate relationship between impressions, concepts, and human nature.
